Femke Hofstee-van der Meulen has a degree in History and Post-Graduate International Law from Leiden University and worked in various European organizations like the Council of Europe, the European Commission and the European Parliament. From 2000 until 2002 she worked in London as researcher for Baroness Vivien Stern, Member of the House of Lords, at the International Centre for Prison Studies. In 2003 she set up Prison Watch an independent advisory organization on prison issues. From August 2005 to April 2007 she was European Director of Altus; a global alliance working across continents and from a multicultural perspective to improve public safety and justice.
After the publication of the book ‘Foreigners in European Prisons’ Femke started a PhD research into ‘Dutch Nationals Detained Abroad’ at Tilburg University. More information on this research can be found at this website.

Zij heeft gewerkt in een aantal Europese organisaties zoals de Europese Commissie en het Europees Parlement. Van 2005 tot 2007 was zij Europees directeur van Altus, een wereldwijde alliantie die vanuit een multiculturele benadering zich inzet voor de verbetering van rechtssystemen en openbare veiligheid. Na de publicatie van het boek ‘Foreigners in European Prisons’ is Femke een promotie onderzoek gestart naar ‘Nederlanders in buitenlandse detentie’ aan de Universiteit van Tilburg.
