The University of Greifswald has been founded in 1456 and is the second oldest in northern Europe. The faculty of law was one of the founding faculties at that time. After the law faculty has been closed in 1946 the reunification of Germany gave the opportunity to reopen it in 1991. The Faculty of Law currently has about 1,500 law students. The exchange with foreign law faculties is based on about 30 Socrates/Erasmus-contracts throughout Europe.
Research at the Department of Criminology, which is part of the law faculty, began in 1992. It is empirically orientated and deals with fundamental criminological questions as well as more application-oriented issues in the fields of the administration of juvenile justice and the penal system. Furthermore, (legally-) comparative studies are conducted in the fields of criminology, juvenile justice and the prison system, especially regarding European countries. These internationally comparative studies comprise the region of the Baltic Sea, especially and more specifically Scandinavia and the Baltic States as well as central and eastern European countries.
